St. Boniface Church in San Francisco opened its doors 15 years ago to the homeless in the region. This initiative was promoted by Father Louis Vitale when he began to offer the church as a sleeping place back in 2004.
Every day hundreds of people come to the church and once here, they are given blankets and use the pews as their beds.
Nobody asks them anything. They don’t have to sign anywhere nor they have to give any kind of explanation. Everyone is welcomed at the church and they are treated with dignity and respect.
Of course, the church also remains available for those who want to attend it during the day. But a considerable portion remains reserved for the homeless people.
This initiative is called Project Gubbio. At the same time, this project also wants to send a message to those attending mass in that the community includes people who are tired, poor or other mental issues.
I want to believe that there are more churches like this one in the world. And if not, they should.
